Position Title: Environmental Specialist - Chemical & Fertilizer Complex

Position Purpose:

Performs field and technical activities to support plant-wide compliance for emissions monitoring and environmental sampling.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the continuous emissions monitoring instrumentation equipment including data recording, operation, maintenance, and repair in compliance with state and federal permits and regulations.

  • Conducts field monitoring and post-leak detection verification of all required process equipment in the LDAR program.

  • Ensures and maintains accurate environmental records, logs and analysis files.

  • Provides assistance to the environmental department, working in hazardous environments and operating a multitude of equipment (heavy equipment and monitoring devices).

  • Responsible for quality assurance and quality control of specific monitoring programs and continually improving compliance plans and procedures such as VOC/HAP monitoring and RCRA sampling/analyses.

  • Operates and maintains VOC/HAP monitoring equipment (PID, FID, etc.), which includes calibration and ensuring our quality assurance procedures are in accordance with EPA protocols.

  • Assists engineers in sampling air, water, and waste to comply with state and federal permits and regulations. Collect environmental samples from groundwater, wastewater, spills, waste disposal, and any other media as required. Conduct SWPPP inspections nd follows good housekeeping activities.

  • Assists in air quality compliance testing and water sampling, required by the Clean Air and Water Acts.

  • Conducts visual emissions monitoring; odor surveys and follow-ups; leaks/spills follow-up; and related reporting.

  • Drafts reports such as plantwide applicability limit (PAL) pollutant tracking, daily emissions monitoring, excess emissions monitoring, gasifier ash disposal, closed and operating landfill compliance, LDAR and other maximum achievable control technologies (MACT) compliance, corrective measures implementation (CMI) compliance, summaries of environmental incidents, waste minimization activities, groundwater monitoring, and surface water monitoring.

  • Maintains current on proper safety procedures and chemical properties of the materials handled.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in a science, electronics, or engineering related field; and 2 years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of laboratory equipment, environmental sampling, emissions monitoring instrumentation, industrial instrumentation, digital equipment, and/or process control components; or

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science or electronics related field.

  • Broad knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.

  • Experience in environmental sampling, waste management, emissions monitoring instrumentation, and process technology preferred.

  • Good written and oral communications skills.

  • Strong computer skills with experience in the use of MS Excel, Word, Access and Outlook.

  • A valid driver’s license.

Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands:

Requires constant hand coordination; frequent sitting, standing, walking, use of computer/keyboard, and climbing stairs and ladders; occasional bending, low level, and elevated activity, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, hand grip up to 25 pounds, reaching above and below shoulder level, crawling, use of tools and foot controls and turning of valves. Requires finger dexterity, ability to perform close work, binocular vision, color vision, hearing, and the ability to speak. The incumbent operates a Forklift, truck, sampling/monitoring equipment, and PC tools (spreadsheets and databases). Requires the ability to analyze data, conduct research, implement recommendations, develop plans and goals, present information to others and work under pressure of time constraints. Approximately 25-50 percent of the day is spent in an office environment. Exposed occasionally to dirt, dust, chemicals, extreme heat and cold, vibration, noise, poor ventilation, electrical risks, confined areas and working at heights up to 350 feet. Incumbents are required to wear dust masks, respirators, and full-face Scott Air Paks when necessary. Occasional travel.
